Lessons in Perseverance that Olympic Athletes Can Teach Us

Some of the top lessons in perseverance:
  • Believe in your dream, no matter what other people think.
  • Look for great mentors in the most unlikely places.
  • Do what you can where you are with what you have.
  • Ultimately, be in competition with yourself.
  • Find role models to provide inspiration.
  • Know it’s okay to ask for help.

Of course, the typical focus on lessons we can learn from the Olympics tend to be on teamwork, communication, building confidence and the like. But for this piece, I’d like to take a more broader view, using the microcosm the Olympic Games provide to examine what drives or motivates us to push ourselves to succeed.

Rules are created so that sports can be played in an organized way.
  • Avoid arguing.
  • Everyone should have a chance to play.
  • Play fair.
  • Follow directions.
  • Respect the other team.
  • Encourage teammates.
  • Respect the decisions of referees and other officials.
  • End with a handshake.
